Comment on What to Say to Jacksonville City Council Members About Biking by Keith White https://bikejax.org/say-jacksonville-city-council-members-biking/#comment-10873 Sun, 21 Aug 2016 01:07:45 +0000 https://bikejax.org/?p=5741#comment-10873 I’ve been riding bike’s ever since I can remember. Bicycle’s today on the current retail market are absolutely ridiculous. From mechanical failure to insure dynamo’s and misappropriated metal. I would say, since I am a pro-biker myself, that bicycle’s even need better tire’s. Try a standard 26″ inch rim with a 48″ inch tire. As for the frame’s on these ridiculous bicycle’s, they all need to get extended wheelbase so the bike’s don’t roll over the handle bars and crash. It’s just a foolish upset that has happened to bicycle’s today and it has made a downfall in bicycle standards, performance and safety, and even the new ridicoulous appearance of these small, short, weak bicycles that are all obviously a toatal mechanical failure from not enough size for the tires and weak wheel’s that are always breaking spokes, to the bad compound plastic and rubber being composd in the manufacture of the tire’s, wheel’s and accessorie’s. Get a better bike, use standard measurement’s, and try riding a 42″ inch top bar with a 36″ chain stay. As for tire’s, the bicycle tire’s should never be steel belted and should also be around at least 8½” inches wide. The tire’s are going to be in a bike, so if you lock the brakes, it should’nt even cause any wear and tear on the rubber compound. Also for brake’s, disc brake’s on a bicycle should be illeagle! I’m outraged at what bicycle’s are being sold as today!!! However; I’ve been riding bicycle’s my whole life, and I am also a pro-biker. I’m going to go get up and ride a bicycle anyway! Be good, be well, stay healthy.

You’re a pioneer! Right-hand turns are the worst! Very scary to see how people take corners sometimes. I love your advice about being courteous to drivers. It can be hard sometimes, but you’re absolutely right. And thanks for reading. :)

Comment on Should I Use Teflon Bike Lube? by Gerald https://bikejax.org/should-i-use-teflon-bike-lube/#comment-10798 Wed, 15 Jun 2016 03:11:57 +0000 https://bikejax.org/?p=9851#comment-10798 Thanks Jack!
I have been using WD-40 bike products for the past year. Use their wet and Dry lube. Living here in Colorado, we get a lot of dry conditions. These dry formulated lubes make a big difference in the amount of dirt accumulated on my chain and cassette. Keep your drivetrain clean, people.
Thanks again Jack.

My wife has a child trailer for the boy, or for heavy grocery runs, and that makes a huge difference. I recently got a rear rack on my road bike and highly recommend any commuter to ditch the back-pack and get a rack and panniers. It makes a huge difference. The best advice I can give to any cyclist in Jacksonville is to ride defensively, strategically and often. The more you ride, the better you feel. The better you feel, the more you ride. But be aware, I have said this many times, since my brother was first hit here in 2005. If you ride in Jacksonville, you will get in an accident. But if you’re expecting it to happen, then you can better your chances of survival. My wife, son and I have all been hit since moving here. A car-free co-worker claims he gets hit every year. My wife, son, and brother were all hit by motorists that were looking left while making a right-hand turn. (No serious injuries, but my brother was hospitalized and had to fight with the motorists insurance company for years to get the hospital bills paid) I cannot express enough the importance of riding defensively. Even if you make eye contact with the driver, that doesn’t mean they’re going to stop.
Don’t be scared! Be aware. Be smart. And for the love, please obey traffic laws. You don’t need to whip through a Walmart parking lot at 25 mph, and there’s no reason to run red lights, all it does is create more motorist-cyclist tension. We have enough motorists saying shit like, “Well, most cyclists ride like maniacs, no wonder they get hit all the time.” Be courteous, the only way we can expect motorists to willingly share the road with us is to be willing to share the road with them.
Thanks for the awesome site Jack, I just stumbled on it earlier today and have been clicking and reading since then. You’ve got some cool stuff here man, keep up the good work.
